Knee Replacement: Stop "Buying" and Start "Preparing"
Before my first knee replacement, I did what most people do. I started a list. Ice machine, grabber tool, wedge pillow, sock aid, all the gadgets that show up the second you search "knee replacement must haves." I thought these people must know because they’ve been through it.

By my second knee replacement, my whole approach had changed. And it had nothing to do with what I could buy on Amazon.

The Problem With "Buying" Your Way Ready

After two knee replacements, here's what I've come to believe. A checklist of products can make you feel prepared without actually preparing you. It's easy to click "add to cart" and feel like you've done something. But recovery doesn't ask what gear you have sitting in a closet. It asks what your body can do, what your mind can hold onto on the heavy days, and whether you've actually thought through what the weeks ahead are going to ask of you.

I learned that along the way. My first knee replacement was almost entirely unplanned except for the date. My knee had degraded so badly by the time surgery happened that I hadn't thought past the surgery date itself. It degraded so far that it led to a hip replacement just seven months later. The lack of real preparation was made apparent afterward.

What "Preparing" Actually Looks Like

Going into my second knee replacement, I stopped looking for "what do I need to buy" and started asking "what does my body actually need to do this well." That shift changed things…alot.

I focused on getting stronger beforehand, not just physically but in a way that gave me confidence going in. I paid attention to how I was fueling my body, hydration, protein, the kinds of foods that support healing instead of working against it. And I got honest with myself about what recovery was actually going to require, mentally and emotionally, not just physically.

Some of the "recommended" gadgets from my first surgery I skipped entirely the second time around, and I never missed them. What I didn't skip was the preparation that actually mattered.

The One Thing I Refused to Skip

There was one piece of preparation I made absolutely non-negotiable the second time, because I'd seen firsthand what happens in recovery without it. It's the single biggest reason my second recovery went so differently than my first. It was building as much strength as possible beforehand.

Preparing Your Whole Self, Not Just Your Cart

Recovery isn't just physical. Our mind and spirit go through this surgery right alongside our body. Preparing for one and ignoring the other catches up with us sooner rather than later.

I walk through exactly what I stopped buying, what I started preparing instead, and the one non-negotiable that changed my second recovery in my newest YouTube video. If you have a knee replacement on the calendar, this is where you start.

Meet Suzie Andrade

I was 41 when I was told I needed a knee replacement.
And that my other knee would likely follow.

That sentence alone changed how I moved through the world.

I stopped playing softball.
I stopped walking just to "walk".
I avoided stairs. Curbs. Parking far away for extra steps.
Even the small, normal things started to feel like obstacles.

One day, I was on the beach, walking through the sand and muttering under my breath with every painful step. I wanted to walk down to the water, but it felt too far. That was the day I drew a very real line in the sand and decided I couldn’t keep living this way.

I had my left knee replaced at 45, my right hip at 46 and my right knee at 48.

What I didn’t know then was that pain would shape my purpose.

Each surgery taught me more than how to heal a body. It taught me resilience, patience and how much faith we carry when we’re forced to slow down and keep going. It also showed me this: there are real gaps in the knee replacement "adventure".

Doctors and physical therapists do important work, but they don’t talk about everything — the fear, the frustration, the days when healing feels invisible. Not because they don’t care. Because they haven’t lived it. I have.

That’s why I created the Yetter Getter Mindset and why I show up as your Holistic Knee Replacement Coach — to fill in the spaces that get skipped so recovery feels doable, supported and human.
