Let me tell you, Week 1 of my own knee replacement recovery was an absolute whirlwind. Between navigating life with a walker, figuring out how to squeeze into the bathroom without knocking over everything in sight, and icing my knee like it was my full-time job, I learned a lot the hard way. Those first seven days are no joke!

But here’s what I realized: the more you prepare before surgery, the smoother that first week will be. I saw it firsthand when I had one knee replacement where I was winging it and another where I was much better prepared. (Spoiler alert: the prepared knee healed way better!)

So, I’m sharing 15 questions you must ask yourself before you roll into the OR to ensure Week 1 goes as smoothly as possible. Bonus: The Knee Replacement Hub is packed with resources to make tackling these questions even easier!

Preparation & Planning

  • Have I prepped my home for easy post-surgery navigation (grab bars, raised toilet seat)?
  • Do I have comfortable, loose-fitting clothes that are easy to put on and take off?
  • Have I stocked up on must-haves like ice packs, pain meds, and healthy snacks?
  • Do I have a clear understanding of my post-op exercises and physical therapy plan?
  • Have I arranged for reliable transportation to and from follow-up appointments?
I’ll never forget trying to figure out my walker-and-bathroom situation without much prep—I’ll save you the awkwardness. Prepping your home is a game-changer, and the Knee Replacement Hub has all the tips to make your space recovery-ready.

Recovery & Wellbeing

  • Am I mentally ready for the initial discomfort and temporary limitations?
  • Do I know how to stay on top of my pain management and medication schedule?
  • Am I comfortable asking for help with things like showering or dressing?
  • Do I have a solid support system to lean on during the tough days?
  • Have I established a communication plan with my surgeon for questions or concerns?
Recovery is equal parts (Actually more like 90%/10%)  mental and physical, and it’s okay to feel overwhelmed. This is where the Yetter Getter Mindset kicks in—lean into the "YET" in I’m not there… yet. You’ll get there, one step (or walker shuffle) at a time.

Rest & Activity

  • Do I understand how to alternate rest with gentle movement to prevent stiffness?
  • Am I ready to use assistive devices like walkers or crutches with confidence?
  • Have I set realistic activity goals for my first week?
  • Do I know the warning signs of excessive swelling or complications?
  • Am I prepared to celebrate every small victory, like bending your knee just a little further or making it to the bathroom solo?
Pro Tip: Toes above your nose! Keep that leg properly elevated to manage swelling—it’s a lifesaver.

Meet Suzie Andrade

I was 41 when I was told that I needed a knee replacement and then likely my other knee would face the same fate.

stopped playing softball.
stopped walking just to walk.
I stopped using stairs and curbs. (Yes, CURBS!)
stopped parking miles away from the store simply to get extra steps.

One day, I was on the beach, walking through sand and cursing every painful step. I wanted to walk to the water, but it was not possible. The water’s edge was too far. It was that moment I decided enough.

I drew the proverbial line in the sand and made a decision to get it done. I was 43 years old.

I was 45 for my left knee replacement and 46 (7 months later) for the right knee replacement, because I pushed the knee too long before replacing it.  I had my right knee replaced at 48.

I had no idea that in that pain I would find purpose. I am so grateful that each of the joints have way surpassed my expectations for recovery. Mostly because I knew they would. I had no doubt they would.

I now share the Yetter Getter Mindset and the way I got through those recoveries in a thriving free community on Facebook.
